British airlines British Airways and EasyJet are canceling flights due to lack of manpower. Companies laid off many employees during the start of the pandemic and are struggling to hire more staff.
The crew shortage is also due to a new outbreak of COVID-19 virus infections among employees of both airlines, who are on leave.
On 4 April 2022, British Airways canceled around 100 flights to/from its hub at Heathrow Airport (LHR), citing higher than normal levels of staff absence due to Covid.
easyJet canceled 222 operations between 1st and 4th April 2022. The British low-cost carrier tried to make up for the staff shortage with a list of additional reserve crew, but the effort was not enough to secure the necessary workforce.
“As a result of the current high rates of Covid infections across Europe, like all companies easyJet is facing higher than normal levels of employee illness,” an easyJet spokesperson told The Guardian.
Passengers who got their flights held at Heathrow (LHR), Manchester (MAN) and Edinburgh (EDI) airports were stuck in long lines while waiting to check-in.
Local airports also faced staff shortages at a time when demand for air travel was increasing commensurate with the easing of travel restrictions.
“Our entire industry is facing staff shortages and recruitment challenges,” said a Manchester Airport spokesperson.
"The removal of all travel restrictions after two years, along with the start of the summer travel season, has seen a rapid increase in passenger numbers, which is putting tremendous pressure on our operation." voice.
