In an attempt to accelerate efforts towards carbon neutral aviation by 2050, LATAM wants to use 5% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) on its flights by 2030. The announcement was made by LATAM Group CEO Roberto Alvo. LATAM will favor SAF coming from South America.

Alvo asked governments, private companies, universities and other airlines to collaborate by generating incentives that allow the production, use and popularization of the SAF in South America.

“South America has the potential to be a world leader in the production of sustainable fuels and, thereby, make a very significant contribution to climate action,” said Alvo.

Currently, the use of SAF is still very expensive and difficult, because of the low supply. The CEO points out that South America has great potential for development because of its wealth of natural resources.

The company's move is part of its quest for carbon-neutral growth, neutralizing 50% of domestic emissions by 2030.
