The Boeing 757-200 freighter registration HP-2020DAE left the runway and broke in two on the morning of Thursday, April 7, at Juan Santamaria International Airport in San José, Costa Rica, Central America.

The plane is part of DHL Aero Expresso and operated flights in Central America. The 22-year-old Boeing was carrying out a regular cargo and mail transport flight to Guatemala City Airport. However, shortly after takeoff, the crew noticed hydraulic problems on the plane, declared an emergency and asked for authorization to return to the airport of origin.

Shortly after touching down, the plane turned at a large angle and completely lost control, causing the plane to go off the runway and the fuselage to break in two in the tail section.

The loss of control was supposedly caused by the hydraulic problem. According to reports, the plane was unable to communicate with the Tower, although there is still no conclusive official report.

Neither of the two crew on board were seriously injured. The airport was temporarily closed for takeoffs and landings.
