Azul won a bid to supply two Airbus A330-200 jets to the FAB (Brazilian Air Force). The planes will be converted to Multi Role Tanker Transport, multi-role transport and refueling (MRTT) aircraft. On Wednesday (6), the deal was confirmed, with a purchase price of U$80.6 million for the aircraft.
The bidding, open to any company in the world, had only Azul presenting a proposal.
The conversion to MRTT should take place with Airbus, in Spain. The process should take 18 months. However, a new tender will be opened for this.
The public notice provides that Azul must supply units manufactured after January 1, 2014. However, only one Azul jet meets this requirement. It is not yet clear what will be done. Perhaps Azul will acquire another unit of the A330 to resell to the FAB.
The Airbus A330 can carry more cargo (37 tons) than the KC-390 (26 tons), an aircraft that performs the same function in the FAB. In addition, the Airbus has a greater range.
The need for more planes for this purpose became clear during the worst moments of the pandemic in Brazil, when it was necessary to transport oxygen and medical supplies.
