Major Australian airports had a weekend with long lines and delays, as they saw demand for travel soar due to the Easter holiday.
As reported by the Simple Flying portal, the central problem at Sydney airports was the lack of security screening personnel for two reasons: The lack of qualified personnel, who were leaving during the pandemic, when demand was low and; many employees were absent because they had been in contact with someone with covid recently.
Friday was the busiest day at Sydney airport in over two years. The company Jetstar, for example, is working at 110% of its pre-pandemic capacity this Easter holiday.
The problems didn't just stop in Sydney, but for similar reasons, spread to Melbourne and Brisbane airports.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce was criticized for pointing out that passengers could be contributing to queues and delays as they were not cooperating when arriving at the x-ray machines, making the process longer than it should have been.
