The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) has placed an order with Saab to upgrade the JAS39 Gripen C/D fighter jets. The order is valued at SEK 500 million (about US$53 million).

This upgrade should ensure a cost-effective solution regarding the acquisition of new fighters, keeping the Gripen C/D operational by the Swedish Air Force until 2035.

The Update is expected to expand the aircraft's operational capabilities, with improvements in autonomy, more modern electronic systems, IRST sensors and electronic warfare systems.

“The Gripen C/D is the backbone of the Swedish Armed Forces today and will remain so for many years to come, so this is an important order where we will ensure the continued operation and operational relevance of the Gripen C/D,” says Jonas Hjelm, Head of the Gripen C/D.
