Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, closures of European airspace are complicating the lives of Russian and Ukrainian carriers. The Russian government has decided to provide a round of financial support worth RUB 19.5 billion, around $235 million to Russian companies.

This is the second such proposal, with President Putin pledging $1.2 billion earlier this month.

“Today (14), on behalf of the President, we will allocate 19.5 billion rubles to Russian airlines. The subsidies will be used to reimburse passengers for the cost of tickets on routes that have been canceled due to external restrictions,” said Mikhail Mishustin, Russian Prime Minister.

The prime minister emphasizes that financial resources must guarantee flight safety and maintenance of the airworthiness of aircraft.

“[the support] is designed to mitigate the negative impact of sanctions imposed by some countries against the Russian Federation and Russian legal entities on the financial and economic condition of airlines and limit the risks caused by the application of sanctions.”

Sanctions against Russia are starting to cause problems in every country in the world. Air Canada suspended its route from Vancouver to Delhi, as the long route to bypass Russian territory would make it financially unviable.

Boeing has removed 90 aircraft destined for Russian operators from its backlog.
