Along with its financial results for the first quarter of 2022, Boeing today announced yet another 777X project delay due to certification issues. The plane must be delivered for its commercial flights only in 2025.

Furthermore, as the aircraft are still in the certification process, units that have already been built will need to be rebuilt prior to delivery if any changes are required.

"To minimize inventory and the number of aircraft requiring changes to be incorporated, the 777-9 production rate is being adjusted, including a temporary pause through 2023. This will result in approximately $1.5 billion in abnormal costs to starting in the second quarter of this year and continuing until 777-9 production resumes," Boeing said.

Airlines that ordered the 777X are already getting impatient with the 777X delays. In February this year, Emirates president Tim Clark cited a possible cancellation of the plane's order. However, Clark still hasn't canceled the order.

Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, on the other hand, takes the position of not caring about the delay of the plane, since the delay time allowed the company to recover from the crisis caused by the arrival of the pandemic. However, the 777X was supposed to renew the Lufthansa fleet by replacing the 747-400. Apparently, Lufthansa will have to decide whether to continue operating the plane or not.

According to the BOE Family Flights portal, 24 777X units have been seen so far at Boeing's field facilities, four of which are test aircraft that are already flying. All Nipon Airways would receive 3 units, Emirates would receive 9, Lufthansa 5 and Qatar 3.
