Former Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro, was getting ready to dispatch his weapon at Brasília Airport, to check-in. When disarming the weapon (removing the ammunition), he ended up firing a shot. The former minister was taken to the Federal Police.

The incident took place in the late afternoon of April 25, at a Latam counter, and did not seriously injure anyone. However, shrapnel from the shot hit an attendant at a Gol counter next door, causing scratches on her arm.

Despite the former minister claiming that the weapon was accidentally fired, modern pistols only fire if they are fully unlocked.

Carrying weapons in flight is allowed, but with some rules. Article 37 of Resolution No. 461 of ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency) provides for the liability of the owner of the weapon.

To carry out the clearance of a firearm, the holder of the weapon must enter the Federal Police website, obtain the Firearm Dispatch Guide and go carrying the weapon to a suitable location. Normally, the armament must be kept in a sandbox during the decommissioning process.

“If it had been someone else, I would have been arrested immediately,” lamented an airline worker. It was not informed by the PF whether the Minister was charged with Firearms (2 to 4 years imprisonment), or what model the pistol was.

Milton Ribeiro's defense stated that he is carrying a weapon and has a CAC registration – Collector, Shooter or Hunter. Ribeiro went on his flight normally. The Federal Police opened a preliminary investigation into the shooting.
