During the night of Friday (April 29), there may have been an invasion in the airspace of Sweden and Denmark, according to information from the Al Jazeera agency. Supposedly, a Russian reconnaissance aircraft, an Antonov An-30 briefly flew over the countries' territory.
"Another Russian violation of Danish airspace. This is totally unacceptable and particularly worrying in the current situation," said Jeppe Kofod, Denmark's foreign minister.
Denmark and Sweden summoned Russian ambassadors to clarify what had happened. The invasion would have taken place in Danish airspace east of the Baltic island of Bornholm, then extending into Swedish airspace.
The Swedish Defense Ministry said its teams recorded the incident and took pictures. “Obviously, we will protest through diplomatic channels,”
In response, the Russian Defense Ministry said that all Russian Aerospace Forces planes carry out their flights in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace.
The Swedish government is considering joining NATO. According to the Novus research institute, 54% of Swedes agree with joining. The deadline for a country decision to join the organization will be May 24th.
Yesterday, May 2, four Russian planes were seen in Swedish territory, being 2 Sukhoi Su-24 and two Sukhoi Su-27. In response, Sweden even deployed its Saab JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets.
