Meet the new generation of ATR, capable of flying on 100% biofuels

On Wednesday (18), ATR, a French-Italian manufacturer, unveiled its new generation of aircraft, called ATR EVO. The turboprop, which is a hybrid, can fly on 100% biofuel. In addition, the plane must reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs by up to 20%. Part of its economy is due to the fact that the propellers are more aerodynamic and have 8 blades. Another very important factor is the more aerodynamic design when compared to the company's previous models.
The sustainability of the plane is a very important point and in line with what airlines are looking for today, with a commitment to zero net carbon emissions by 2050. Thus, the aircraft's feasibility studies have already begun, with the launch of the program expected to take place in 2023.
“Our next generation of aircraft will be a step forward in responsible flying through additional incremental innovations. When it enters the market, the new ATR Evo will pave the way for a decarbonised future for aviation. Key benefits include an overall fuel improvement of 20% and 100% SAF compatibility. This means the aircraft will emit 50% less CO2 than a regional jet when powered by kerosene. When using 100% SAF, your emissions will be close to zero,” said Stefano Bortoli, CEO of ATR.
The ATR EVO will also have the cabin made from recycled materials, which are lighter and more biodegradable. Part of the higher rate of ascent is due to this. “Recyclability will also be at the heart of our new design,” said Stephane Viala, senior vice president of engineering at ATR.
The plane will use batteries and electric motors to supplement conventional thrusters during the climb.
