China's Civil Aviation Authority (CAAC) no longer allows Russian Boeing and Airbus planes, whose legal status is unclear, to enter its airspace.
The aircraft's legal status was not clarified following Western sanctions, according to Russian news agency RBK. China, in turn, required Russian airlines to prove that the aircraft were no longer registered abroad.
Many leasing companies stopped working with Russia because of the sanctions. Russia, however, did not return the planes and simply re-registered them in the country.
As Russia has yet to prove the aircraft's status, China withdrew the landing and overflight permits for Boeing and Airbus from its airspace.
