The UK Minister for Aviation and the Secretary for Transport were in a meeting with leaders from airports, airlines, aviation leaders and ground service companies on Wednesday (1).

The theme of the meeting was the chaos that has often been recorded at airports, with long lines not uncommon. In addition, flight cancellations occur frequently because of the lack of staff at airports and within airlines. As we reported here before, this fact is observed throughout Europe.

The government has also been taking steps to minimize the problem, such as the commitment to publish a booklet that guarantees that consumers can have access to their rights.

During the meeting, Grant Shapps, the Secretary of State for Transport, expressed concern about this situation and the pressure on airlines as demand increased more than expected. In addition, tickets for summer vacations are being sold even in the face of the problem, which could further aggravate the situation.

The UK government and the aviation industry will form a working group to address the issues. In addition, both the Secretary and the Minister of Aviation underlined the government's commitment to the country's aviation, as £8 billion was made available to the sector during the pandemic.

“I also understand the resource strains in the aviation industry, but that doesn't justify the poor planning and overcrowding of flights they can't handle. Both myself and the Minister of Aviation have made the necessary changes to allow the industry to prepare for the summer, but now we need the industry to do its part,” Shapps said.

This is not an airline, airport or government issue. We are in this together and look forward to exploring options with ministers to move the industry forward as we approach summer,” said Tim Alderslade, CEO, Airlines UK.
