Lufthansa, which has already retired its fleet of Airbus A380s, hinted that it could add some of the retired A380s to its fleet, in order to maintain its denser and longer routes. The company is facing difficulties with these routes due to the delay of the Boeing 777X, an aircraft that the German company has already ordered 20 units.
Carsten Spohr, the chief executive of Lufthansa, is speaking to Boeing in a tone of concern, as the airline still does not know how it will transport its passengers in the summers of 2024 and 2025 until the 777X arrives.
Boeing, in turn, is offering four to six units of the 777-300ER to meet this need without the company having to resort to planes from rival Airbus. The 777-300ERs offered are those that were ordered by other companies but never delivered and need another buyer.
The planes that would possibly cover the missing routes would be the four-engine A340-400 and A340-600. Or even the A380. However, these planes are much less efficient than Boeing's 777-300ER.
Anyway, the Boeing 777-300ER could be a good solution for the company, since the reactivation of the A380 could be slower, since they would still need to undergo revisions and maintenance, in addition to greater crew training.
The 777-300ER is already part of sister airline Swiss. In addition, Lufthansa Cargo operates its freighter version, the 777F.
