Although in jest, the CEO, Tim Clark, went so far as to say that the A350-1000 is too small to meet the needs of the company, which would need something bigger.
Emirates, in need of widebodys, came to order the Airbus A330neo and A350, but gave up on the A330neo. The company has 50 A350s on order.
Emirates already operates the large Airbus A380 and has the Boeing 777X on order. However, due to delays on the 777X, the A380 is still the company's best solution for congested airports.
“I don't know what we'll do if the 777-9X doesn't come. We'll have the 787-10, is that it? How are we going to put two 787s in a restricted airport like London Heathrow? And how do we do that in Sydney, San Francisco?” said the CEO at IATA’s annual event, AGM 2022.
On the other hand, Clark criticized the Airbus A380 for having four engines, which would increase consumption and decrease efficiency, leaving only Emirates interested in the jet today.
A market trend is for four-engines to be retired soon, as twin-engines are more efficient from a fuel economy point of view.
