In order to renew its fleet, the British low-cost airline, easyJet, has placed an order for 56 aircraft of the Airbus A320neo model. Options were made on these aircraft in 2013, but the order has now been placed to secure their delivery slots between 2026 and 2029.

According to the latest list price released by Airbus, the purchase would total US$6.5 billion. However, easyJet managed to get a significant price reduction because of the deal made in 2013.

In addition, 18 A320neo units from a previous order will be converted to the A321neo, the largest in the family, which are expected to be delivered between 2024 and 2027.

The company has 357 Airbus jets in its fleet, of which 58 are of the neo variant. With the fleet renewal taking place, easyJet will have greater passenger transport capacity, as it has 93 Airbus A319 aircraft, with 156 seats. In addition, the new planes must guarantee lower operating costs and greater fuel economy when compared to previous versions.

“[...] Older A319s and A320s leave the airline and new A320neos and A321neos join, providing benefits to easyJet. We believe this will deliver positive returns for the business and the delivery of our goals,” said Johan Lundgren, CEO of easyJet.

As with any major purchase, easyJet shareholders will have the final say on the order. To reassure investors, the airline notes that it intends to finance the purchase with internal resources, cash flow, sale and leaseback transactions and debt.
