Russia is focused on producing aircraft with domestic components, such as the Irkut MC-21 and Sukhoi SSJ100. In addition to strengthening national aviation, the country manages to avoid Western sanctions that affect the sector.

The CR929 project, formerly known as the Comac 929, was focused on competing with Boeing and Airbus planes. However, China could also receive sanctions due to its possible intervention in Taiwan.

Thus, the countries agreed to produce the plane with domestic parts and components. Russian Industry and Commerce Minister Denis Manturov said the plane will be focused on serving domestic aviation. Manturov also said that without the involvement of Western manufacturers, the plane will take longer than expected. The deadline for the first takeoff of the CR929 was in 2021, but it was postponed to 2025, but it cannot be met.

The process of choosing new suppliers is underway, with a possible choice of PD-35 engines, from Russian state-owned Aviadvigatel. Russia is also expected to work on composite materials for the airframe, while China will work on the interior and avionics.

With these changes, the project, led by Russian state-owned UAC and Chinese state-owned Comac, can only be expected from something like 2028.
