The Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER, which came from Doha, Qatar, had to quickly dodge a huge balloon while making the final approach to the Guarulhos airstrip. The incident happened yesterday morning, Sunday (3).

Even after dodging the balloon just before reaching the runway, the pilots managed to land the plane without any problems. The case drew attention, but it was not the only incident of the day with this balloon. The Qatari pilot made a formal complaint.

“The flight landed normally and within safety margins. The captain filled out a report and sent it to the Brazilian authorities, who are investigating the case,” Qatar Airways said in a statement.

The practice of releasing unmanned balloons is potentially dangerous for aviation, since the ingestion of an object of this size by the engine could cause a bigger problem, and could even cause an accident. There is danger, too, when the balloon falls, which can cause uncontrolled fires.

The balloon fell in a residential region of Guarulhos and did not cause any major problems. The object, which started a fire and burned the electrical wiring, was seized by the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) of Guarulhos.

In Brazil, releasing these objects is considered an illegal practice and a crime. Perhaps due to lack of supervision and the difficulty in finding criminals, the practice continues to be much more frequent than we would like to see.
