TAP, one of the main Portuguese airlines, has a major problem of staff shortages. Without revealing the exact number of canceled or delayed flights, the company says that 40% are related to air traffic control and handling reasons.

Assuming the problem, the airline adopted measures to reduce the inconvenience. The emergency measures were published by Jornal de Negócios.

An important part of the measures is the rental of aircraft from Hi Fly, a company specializing in the rental of aircraft with crew, which will fly on behalf of TAP for a month in holiday destinations such as Punta Cana, Warsaw and Vienna. The purpose of this measure is to free up capacity on the Portuguese airline's aircraft to recover from delays and cancellations.

The aircraft will be leased under the ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance) regime.

In addition, TAP will limit ticket sales on certain routes to avoid overcrowding on planes and to be able to allocate passengers from canceled flights.

TAP's letter says that there will be better compensation for employees who work overtime, in addition to the hiring of 70 more cabin crew and a program to reward workers' efforts.

Groundforce, the company that handles TAP, also adopted a contingency plan to recruit more workers and equipment.

NAV (Portuguese Air Navigation) and the Portuguese Air Force are currently implementing a protocol for optimizing the use of airspace, which should reduce delays by air traffic control.
