As of January 1, 2023, the municipality of Guarulhos intends to charge an environmental preservation fee to all airlines operating at the city's International Airport, the largest in the entire country and in all of South America.

However, the Brazilian Airlines Association (ABEAR), the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) expressed their concern.

The entities met last week with government officials to discuss the matter, as they allege that charging the fee violates international agreements involving Brazil.

The idea is that the fee is charged according to the take-off weight of each aircraft.

According to the prefecture, the rate is important, since 5,000 deaths from respiratory diseases occurred between 2016 and 2020 because of pollution. In addition, the city government emphasizes that the moments when planes cause the greatest environmental impacts are during takeoff and landing, and that the entire city is exposed to soot from burning fuels.

Passengers already pay very high amounts on tickets. The fee should put even more pressure on airlines, which should pass on the values ""in the form of further increases to the consumer.
