Aer Lingus has signed an agreement to purchase 6.3 million gallons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from Gevo per year for five years starting in 2026. The agreement is valued at $173 million and is expected to help achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

Aer Lingus has committed to using 10% SAF by 2030. Lynne Embleton, the company's CEO, said that by 2026, half of the total fuel used by the carrier will be sustainable fuel.

Finnair is another airline that recently announced an agreement to acquire 7 million gallons of SAF from Gevo starting in 2027.

Something that worries about alternative energy sources is that, depending on the production model, they can emit CO2 while being manufactured. That leaves a problem: the plane will pollute less, but the SAF production plant will pollute more. However, Gevo uses inedible parts of corn and produces isobutanol, a raw material that, in theory, is renewable and pollutes less in the process of obtaining SAF.

While it doesn't provide exact numbers on CO2 emissions, Gevo says it has a production model designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the fuel's life cycle.
