During the Farnborough Airshow 2022, yesterday (20), Airbus announced that it has finished building the first prototype of a new, more efficient wing. The project is called Wing of Tomorrow. The announcement was about the completion of the first of three prototypes.
The research program is led by the UK and was created to address the challenge of meeting the increasing performance demands for the next generation of aircraft, with fuel efficiency and the aim of creating lighter wings at a lower cost by producing them. more quickly.
“We need to ensure that our aircraft perform at their best in the future, particularly in terms of fuel efficiency. And we also have to be able to meet new production rate targets,” says Tim Galsworthy, team leader.
One of the prototypes will be used to understand systems integration; one to test the structure with computer modeling; and the last one to test scale production. The wings are constructed with innovative materials and include a folding wing tip system, similar to that of the Boeing 777X.
According to Airbus, the program contributes to the goal of aviation decarbonization and sustainability.
