As we recently reported, the Lufthansa Group reported profit in the second quarter of 2022. Swiss International Airlines, as part of the group, also reported profit in the first half of 2022. The numerical value was around 70 million dollars. Thus, the company expects to be able to return to profit as early as 2022, after the difficult year of 2021.
The year 2022 was also difficult in the first few months, as covid was still showing significant impacts with the spread of a new variant. However, even in the first quarter, demand for travel increased again, and the company transported 1.8 million passengers in the period. In the second quarter, the increase in demand was repeated, with 5.3 million passengers, which represents a fivefold increase compared to the same period last year.
There were more than 47 thousand flights and a capacity in ASK (seats per available kilometers) 137% higher. Passenger revenue per kilometer (RPK) increased 422% over the same period last year, with aircraft load factor also increasing over the same period from 40% to 74%. However, it is important to note that the airline is still operating at reduced capacity.
“This also allowed us to terminate our bank loan which had been guaranteed by the Swiss Confederation in advance,” said SWISS Chief Financial Officer Markus Binkert.
Swiss has gone through two years of rigorous measures to make a profit, which the company says it has already achieved and the measures are now over. Among the strictest measures are salary cuts.
Despite the unfavorable conditions for aviation, such as the high cost of fuel and the high cost of tickets, Swiss believes that it will close the year 2022 with good numbers.
