Air Europa, which had a 20% stake purchased for US$100 million by the IAG Group this week, announced the acquisition of the widebody Airbus A350. There will be 8 aircraft units to compose the long-range fleet. Today, the company already operates 22 units of the 787 Dreamliner.
In addition, the company will add 5 more 787 Dreamliner units. This aircraft entered the company's fleet to replace the Airbus A330-200.
What draws attention is that the European company operates a fleet almost entirely standardized with Boeing planes.
It was unclear whether Air Europa will acquire the A350 new, used or on lease, which is the most common modality on the market today. Just as it is not clear when the new planes should arrive.
“For next year we have a clear commitment to growth: we are going to acquire another eight new Airbus A350-900 long-haul aircraft,” said Juan José Hidalgo, head of the company.
