After months of preparation, Vertical Aerospace carried out a manned flight test with its eVTOL VX4 for the first time this weekend, as announced by the company today (26).

The electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft company accomplished the feat on a full-size, piloted prototype. Many companies are developing eVTOLs to innovate in urban mobility, among them the Brazilian Embraer.

For safety reasons, the aircraft was tied to the ground while its engines lifted it to 1.5 m. This was the fourth stage of the flight test program out of a total of six. The next step is a low-speed flight at 50 feet. In a future test, the company wants to demonstrate the transition from vertical to horizontal flight.

The company says it wants to demonstrate that it meets the most stringent safety standards by carrying out tests with a pilot. Thus, the company received a “permit to fly” from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the United Kingdom. In addition, the test flight program is also supported by the Aerospace Technology Institute, a UK government industry program designed to advance transformative technology in air transport.

The company intends to obtain certification for the VX4 by 2025. Several companies already have orders for the aircraft, such as American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Avolon, Bristow, Marubeni, Iberojet and FLYINGGROUP, as well as GOL, AirAsia, Japan Airlines and Gozen Holdings for lease by Avolon.
