There are already indications that the air cargo market is slowing from the record levels of 2020 and 2021. However, the levels are still very high, which led AerCap to place a firm order of 15 units for the Airbus A321P2F (converted from passengers to freighter).

The order placed with Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) also includes options for an additional 15 aircraft.

Converted aircraft are already part of AerCap's portfolio, with deliveries expected to begin in 2023. AerCap has 62 A321ceo aircraft in its own fleet. The conversions, if the options are exercised, mean that half of the fleet will be freighters.

Aercap has other conversions in the works, such as 20 Boeing 777-300ERs in a program that started with GECAS, a giant aircraft leasing company that was acquired by AerCap in 2020.

AerCap has noticed a great deal of interest in aircraft of the type. Thus, there is great interest in growing the portfolio of aircraft of this type.

“The A321 freighter is the best-in-class and most fuel-efficient aircraft to replace the Boeing 757-200 freighter. This transaction is in line with our strategy of diversifying our fleet with better economy and returns. We look forward to working with the EFW team on this program and appreciate the trust they have placed in AerCap,” said Rich Greener, Head of AerCap Cargo.
