The low-cost airline Wizz Air was recently named the most sustainable airline in the world, largely thanks to its brand new fleet (average age less than 5 years) of Airbus A320neo. But actions to ensure sustainability continue. This Tuesday, the 15th, the airline signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the chemical company OMV for the supply of up to 185 thousand tons of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel).

The agreement will supply the fuel from next year until 2030. The use of the fuel will be responsible for even greater emission reductions, being 25% by the end of the agreement, contributing to the company's goal of having net zero emissions by 2050 .

This is not the company's only action to ensure sustainability. In June of this year, the company operated a sustainability demonstration flight from Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest to Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport with an Airbus A321neo fueled with a mixture containing 14.2% SAF and the remainder Jet A1. With the flight, the company demonstrated emissions 12.8% lower than the same flight fueled only by the Jet A1.

OMV is also a company committed to its emissions. The chemical company forecasts SAF production of 700,000 tonnes by 2030 and its net carbon emissions to equal 0 by 2050.

“I am delighted that the cooperation between OMV and Wizz Air will help us achieve our respective strategic sustainability goals. With Wizz Air we have achieved a strong international partner. The SAF is the most significant path towards the decarbonization of aviation in the coming decades. Our strategic relationship is paving the way for a more sustainable aviation future that we both want to be a part of, said Nina Marczell, OMV Aviation Vice President, Fuel Distribution and Public Sector.”
