Air India, the Indian airline that was bought by the Tata Group earlier this year, is in negotiations with Boeing and Airbus for the acquisition of up to 370 new aircraft, 300 of which are narrowbodies and 70 are widebodies.
The order is in line with market forecasts from several companies, which say that the commercial aviation market in India is expected to grow strongly over the next two decades.
This could be the biggest purchase for the airline, which wants to renew its fleet under the new command. Initially, the order could be for Boeing planes, for Airbus planes or divided between the two manufacturers. It remains to be seen, as the discussions are confidential.
If the agreement were for the acquisition of the Boeing 737 MAX 10, a variant that is not yet certified, the list price would be just over 40.5 billion dollars, although discounts are common in large orders.
An order of this size for Boeing could be a game-changer for the Indian market, as Airbus aircraft dominate the country's skies. However, producing and delivering 300 planes would take several years, or even more than a decade.
