The two Indian carriers, Air India and Vistara, will merge into one big carrier, confirming earlier rumours. The information was confirmed today (29) by the Tata Group, owner of Air India, and by Singapore Airlines, a partner of Vistara.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) will invest US$250 million to own 25.1% of the airline's shares from the Tata Group.
The transaction is expected to close by March 2024, if all regulatory approvals occur by then.
Singapore Airlines owns 51% of Vistara shares, while the Tata group owns 49% of the company.
In addition, the new group will include Air India Express and Air Asia India, forming a company with 215 aircraft in the fleet. Despite this, branding details have yet to be confirmed.
The company formed will be the second largest carrier in the country, with domestic and international operations, second only in terms of fleet size to IndiGo, with 285 aircraft.
