On January 23, Emirates announced the successful completion of the ground test for one of its GE90 engines, which powers the Boeing 777-300ER, which was operated using SAF.
The test carried out at the company's Engineering Center in Dubai was aimed at analyzing the engine's capabilities when operating with 100% SAF of special mixture without requiring modifications to the aircraft or special maintenance procedures. Throughout its cycle and life, SAF manages to reduce emissions by up to 80% when compared to conventional fuel.
The test started with the Honeywell 331-500 Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) at 100% SAF. The GE90 engines of the Boeing 777 were started and tested in various power regimes, such as idle, takeoff and climb, and, soon after, were placed in a cruise configuration for 15 minutes.
Test data with the engine that used SAF will be compared with that of the other engine, which burned conventional fuel. Emirates has long supported the use of the SAF and has contributed to initiatives and research in this regard.
