Aviation cities are becoming more and more popular. The government of Thailand has announced that it will build such a mega structure, which may be one of the largest structures ever proposed by the Thai government.
The total investment will be US$8.82 billion at U-Tapao Airport (UTP). The site, which should become an international airport, should occupy an area of ""approximately 1040 hectares and should connect to the two largest terminals in the country.
In addition to the passenger terminal, the site will house a free trade zone with several facilities, with places for recreation, food, including places for flight training, maintenance and aircraft overhaul. All this should create around 15,000 new jobs.
The space should receive between 60 and 75 million passengers a year. By way of comparison, Guarulhos Airport (GRU) received 34 million passengers in 2022.
The project also foresees important innovations, such as: The proximity of the passenger terminal to wider facilities; Intermodality and a high level of accessibility, both locally and regionally; A functional mix of buildings in different modalities such as receptive, tertiary, catering, commerce and leisure activities; Distinctive architectural details that reflect Thai culture; Reduced environmental impact; High standards of sustainability; Greater integration of public areas and private buildings.
