Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) announced the stop that the project of its regional jet, which never came to be commercially produced, had its development canceled, as expected.
Today's morning announcement puts an end to the project for a jet similar to the regional aircraft offered by Embraer. The SpaceJet concept was unveiled in 2007.
MHI points out that the discontinuation of the project will not have an impact on the company's financial results, adding that the legacy of the project will be felt throughout Japanese commercial aviation through all the experience and knowledge acquired during the program, such as "the certification process highly complex for commercial aircraft”.
MHI explains that it stopped the project due to failures at a technological level, as well as decarbonization solutions. MHI also cites the fact that the aircraft does not meet the requirements of the North American regional market. In this way, the development would require more funding, making it economically unfeasible.
"Large amounts of time and money were spent on this project." “Due to the pandemic and subsequent pilot shortage, the future of the regional travel industry remains opaque,” ""said CEO Seiji Izumisawa,
