Air India has placed a historic order for aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, as has been speculated for some months. The airline, which is part of the Tata Group, officially announced today the large order totaling 470 aircraft.
The order is the biggest in history. The last record had been registered in 2011, when American Airlines ordered 460 aircraft divided between Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
This announcement is part of a major restructuring that the Indian company is undertaking. The order will completely renew its aging fleet, which includes narrow-body Airbus aircraft and widebodies 777 and 787. In all, the current fleet has 115 aircraft, and the airline has not purchased any new aircraft since 2006.
The order includes 210 narrow-body Airbus A320neo aircraft for short and medium-haul operations and 40 wide-body A350s, adding up to 250 new Airbus aircraft. The order also includes 220 Boeing aircraft, including 190 narrowbodies 737 MAX, 20 widebodies 787 Dreamliner and 10 777X, which has not yet received certification.
Air India's intention is to increase its participation in domestic and international destinations, as well as recover trips to cities like Delhi and Mumbai, which are currently dominated by other companies, such as Emirates. The airline also aims to establish itself as one of the world's leading airlines.
In addition to the new aircraft, the airline does not rule out the possibility of leasing more aircraft or acquiring others.
