Red Bull performed an unprecedented feat in aviation: it landed and took off a plane from the Burj Al Arab helipad, in Dubai. The helipad is over 200 meters high. The feat happened yesterday (14).
The aircraft used is short takeoff and landing (STOL). It is a single-engine piston Carbo Cub, from the company CubCrafters. The company makes new versions of the classic Piper Cub, a famous single-engine trainer.
The pilot of the plane, the Polish Czepiela managed to stop the plane in just 20.76 meters. “Usually when approaching a runway I see the height above it and can easily control the approach trajectory. Today, the helipad disappeared under the nose of the plane and my field of vision was reduced. I had to rely on my practice and instincts when my last landmarks disappeared if I wanted to stop before running out of space.” he said.
As if the historic landing were not enough, the pilot even took off the plane from the platform. “The best part after landing was taking off, I had so much fun, dropping the plane out of the sky and diving almost to beach level,” he said.
The plane underwent modifications to make all this possible. Weight was reduced to just 425 kilograms, the fuel tank was moved to the rear of the plane, and a nitrogen system was added to increase the plane's power.
