Despite the cargo market showing a decline compared to 2021 and 2022, according to IATA, new aircraft are needed more than ever. Boeing announced that it will build a new 737-800BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter) conversion line in India, in partnership with GMR Aero Technic.

The facility will be located in the GMR Aero Technic hangar in Hyderbad at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The location is strategic as air cargo volume in India is forecast to grow by 6.4% per year through 2040.

This partnership, announced on the 10th, will allow India to increase its cargo capacity and strengthen its position as a cargo hub in the region.

Boeing has extensive experience in conversions, as more than 1300 planes have been converted to freighters. The conversion involves removing the seats, installing a cargo door, reinforcing the floor and adding structural changes to the aircraft.

The deal will ensure that GMR Aero Technic becomes the first Boeing supplier in India to have the capability to carry out future conversions of domestic and foreign aircraft.
