Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Western countries have imposed a number of restrictions on Russia, including not allowing Russian aircraft to use its airspace. As a result, Russia has also closed its airspace to Western flights, meaning airlines have to take long turns to reach destinations in Asia.
The US wants Asian and Middle Eastern airlines to be forced to no longer use Russian airspace, as they continue to maintain diplomatic relations with Russia and use its airspace.
By flying routes that pass through Russian airspace, Asian and Middle Eastern airlines, especially from China, save time in reaching US destinations.
In this way, the USA claims that this competition is “unfair”, since passengers choose to buy tickets from Chinese companies, with much faster and cheaper flights.
The New York Times reported that Airlines 4 America (A4A), the nation's leading airline union, is estimating a loss of $2 billion in market share.
US airlines are lobbying congressmen and the White House to resolve the issue. The idea is that Asian airlines need to meet the same requirements as US airlines.
The Biden administration must "take steps to ensure that foreign airlines flying over Russia do not depart, land, or transit through US airports," said Marli Collier, a spokeswoman for Airlines for America.
Officials at the Department of Transportation (DOT) did not comment on the matter, but the trend is that the issue will bring more tensions to the already complicated relationship between the US and China.
