The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has published worldwide air transport data for the month of February 2023, following the increased demand for air travel after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Domestic demand already shows levels close to those recorded before the pandemic, in February 2019. The number was 97.2%, measured in RPK. This number is 25.2% higher than in the same period last year.
International traffic also had a good level, but still below domestic traffic. The registered number was 77.5% compared to the same period in 2019, representing an increase of almost 90% compared to last year.
These numbers led to total air traffic up 84.9% compared to the period before the pandemic, an increase of 55.5% compared to last year.
“Despite uncertain economic signs, demand for air travel remains strong around the world and particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. The industry is now around 15% below 2019 demand levels and that gap is narrowing by the month,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General.
International seat capacity also grew, but more modestly, at 53.5%, bringing the passenger occupancy rate to 77.7%. Passenger load factors in international markets increased by 14.8 percentage points compared to the previous year, remaining 1.9 percentage points below pre-pandemic load factors.
