The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered extra and periodic inspections of water faucets and toilets on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
According to the FAA, faucets may leak, potentially damaging electrical systems critical to flight safety. If a leak is found, the part must be replaced.
During the flight of an unidentified airline, water was detected in areas that house electronic equipment late last year.
“Findings include a loss of water pressure during flight and a leak in the potable water system, discovered after landing, which caused water to migrate into the electronics compartment and affect various parts.” FAA statement.
In addition, the airline conducted an inspection of its entire fleet of 787s and identified other aircraft with the leak.
Boeing has acknowledged the problem, stating that it is a slow leak (about 8 ounces per hour – 236 mL per hour), attributed to an O-ring seal. However, Boeing said the issue was limited to certain 787s, while the FAA's order would cover all of them.
Furthermore, the FAA said this is a temporary solution while Boeing works on a permanent solution to the problem.
JAMCO, an aircraft component manufacturing company, is the supplier of the 787 Dreamliner's bathrooms, but it's unclear whether the company was involved in the redesign of the widebody's faucet parts.
