DHL Express has announced that it will acquire 9 Boeing 777s to renew its fleet. Jetran's planes were dedicated to passenger transport, but will undergo a complete upgrade and conversion of their interiors, including the installation of structural reinforcements, cargo door and other necessary modifications.

The first aircraft should start the process in 2024, with the prediction that the 9 will be operating until 2027. The aircraft will be used to transport cargo over long intercontinental distances.

These planes are not as fuel efficient as the new generation. However, compared to other DHL aircraft, the efficiency gain will be significant. Also, these planes were probably cheaper to acquire since they have a shorter lifespan ahead of them. So this is just the beginning of DHL's fleet modernization.

Another reason for choosing the converted 777s is that these planes will arrive much faster than if the company had ordered the 777F directly from Boeing.

"By modernizing our intercontinental fleet, we are able to simultaneously enhance our proven ability to meet growing demand, improve our environmental footprint and provide a better quality of service to our customers. We are pleased to continue to demonstrate to partners and customers how these advancements elevate our service and move us closer to our Sustainability Roadmap goals," said Robert Hyslop, Executive Vice President, Global Aviation, DHL Express.
