Boeing's ecoDemonstrator program is expected to gain an additional aircraft to help test technologies that increase the sustainability and safety of aviation.

Boeing revealed its plans for the program in 2023 today. In all, the program will evaluate 19 technologies this year on its Boeing 777-200ER.

In addition, the program will be expanded, with the addition of “explorer” aircraft. The first to be used for this purpose will be a 787-10 Dreamliner, which will perform the first test flights in June from Seattle to Tokyo, Singapore and Bangkok.

The flights will be based on a flight plan that seeks ideal climate, air traffic and other conditions, in order to demonstrate that adequate planning can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 10%.

"To support our industry's goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, Boeing is expanding our ecoDemonstrator program with Explorer airplanes to test even more sustainability-focused technologies," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

In addition, the aircraft will use the highest amount of SAF available at each of its stops.

Since 2012, the ecoDemontrator program has tested more than 200 new technologies focused on sustainability and the passenger experience. For 2023, Boeing has specified which technologies should be tested on the program's 777-200ER, such as:

– Sustainable wall panels in the cargo hold made from 40% recycled carbon fiber and 60% resin produced from bio-based raw material.
– Fiber optic fuel quantity indicator sensor compatible with 100% SAF.
– Electronic Flight Bag application with Smart Airport Maps, a component of Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro, which reduces operating costs and supports safe taxi operations by representing contextual airport data.
– For all flight tests, the aircraft will use the highest SAF blend available locally.
