As a way to continue the renewal and expansion of its fleet, Ryanair announced today (9) that it has placed a large order with Boeing, for up to 300 narrow-body 737 MAX 10 jets.

Negotiations for this order had started before the covid-19 pandemic, but were suspended in September 2021, as the companies were unable to reach an agreement on the price. However, Ryanair finally accepted having to pay a higher price for the planes.

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary told Simple Flying: "The problem we have with the MAX 10 is obviously the 30 extra seats. If you want us to buy an aircraft with 30 extra seats that we have to fill six times a day, that's a lot of revenue dilution. So we need a much more competitive seat price if you want the extra 30 seats."

Today's deal is split into 150 firm orders plus 150 options. In all, the deal is valued at $40 billion.

The airline intends to use half of the new jets to replace the previous generation 737s, while the other half will bolster the company's growth.

Currently, Ryanair's only MAX is the 737 8-200, a modified version of the 737 MAX 8 to accommodate 197 passengers. The plane is equipped with an extra emergency exit, because of its capacity for more passengers.

Deliveries will start in 2027 and should continue until 2033. In addition, the planes will have 228 seats each. This is a significant capacity increase. The airline, which carried 168 million passengers during the last financial year, aims to expand that number to 200 million in 2025 and 300 million by 2034.
