Lufthansa will sell 6 of its 14 A380s back to Airbus. The airline made this announcement in March 2019 alongside announcing the acquisition of 20 units of the Airbus A350-900 and citing economic reasons for reducing the fleet of the double-decker jet.

The airline will receive about $14 million less for the jets because of storm damage that is not covered by insurance. The damage occurred while the planes were being stored, possibly in Teruel, Spain.

The total price of the jets was not revealed, but the company said that the planes would be sold between 2022 and 2023. However, it is known that Airbus will pay US$327 million for the six jets, compared to the previously estimated US$341 million.

However, this may not be the end of the iconic jet's lifespan. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr said reactivating the plane was more important than previously thought. This can be explained by the problems and delays faced by Boeing and Airbus. Furthermore, the A380 will fly at least until 2027.

Three of the Double Decker jets have already been taken out of storage, meaning they should be flying for the company again soon. According to plans, the aircraft should start commercial service as early as June this year.
