Much has been said about a lengthened version of the Airbus A220, the A220-500. So much so that Bank of America suggested that the European manufacturer would be very close to revealing the launch of this plane, which should take place from the 19th to the 25th of June, during the Paris Air Show, the largest aerospace exhibition in the world, ahead of the UK's Farnborough Air Show and the Dubai Air Show.

Airbus says it is considering an elongated version of the jet, but that the priority at the moment is the -100 and -500 variants, with 135 and 160 passengers, respectively. "We do not intend to launch a new variant in the current environment," Airbus said.

The possible new variant could accommodate up to about 180 passengers, competing directly with the Boeing 737 MAX 8, but taking advantage of its more modern design. A stretched A220 could potentially cannibalize sales of its A320 sibling.
