The International Air Transport Association (IATA) revealed encouraging data on passenger traffic in the month of May. The agency published yesterday (6), that total passenger traffic rose 39.1% in May this year compared to May last year. The demand for air travel also grew and registered 96.1% of what was observed before the pandemic.

Supply measured in available seat kilometers (ASK) for air travel and demand measured in paid passenger kilometers carried (RPK) also increased in May. The high compared to the same period last year was 35% and 39%, respectively.

The good numbers led the average aircraft occupancy rate to 81.5%, practically the same levels recorded in 2019, before the pandemic.

The number of passengers on domestic flights was 5.3% higher than before the pandemic, having registered 36.4% more than in the same period last year.

As usual, international operations have not yet reached the level of 2019, but reached 90.8%. On the other hand, the growth registered in relation to the same period of last year was 40.9%.

In addition, Willie Walsh, director general of IATA, said that airlines are expected to net profit of US$9.8 billion worldwide, their first year of profitability since the pandemic.
