According to official data from TAP Air Portugal, there was a 30.2% increase in passengers transported in the first half of the year, when compared to the same period last year. The absolute number was 7.58 million, up about 15% from the pre-pandemic period on its intercontinental routes.

Despite the good numbers, the company is still about 4% below its numbers from the same period before the pandemic. The company reported net losses of US$ 63 million in the first quarter of 2023, but the number is only half the deficit for the same period of 2022. The numbers show that the company is on the right track.

TAP's European network is still 10% below what it was before the pandemic, but almost 30% above what it was in the same period last year. Its network in Brazil, North America and Africa is 31.1% above the first half of 2022 and has already exceeded its pre-covid levels by 14.7%.

The Portuguese government should start the process of privatizing the airline this month, with the IAG group, Air France-KLM and Lufthansa already showing interest in acquiring its stake.
