Pakistan, the country where a fatal accident with a PIA Airbus A-320 recently occurred, may have a flight safety problem of unprecedented proportions.
No less than 262 pilots may have carried thousands of passengers carrying fake flight licenses.
The scandal broke out when a pilot was found to have bribed authorities to obtain his license, but the problem may not stop there. The 262 pilots identified as possible beneficiaries of the fraudulent licenses are suspended pending investigations.
To make matters worse, the country's main airline may be the main employer of most of the alleged fake pilots.
It is impossible not to relate the fatal accident of the PIA with the possibility of the aircraft having a suspect pilot on board. If confirmed, the consequences for the company remain open, as the judicial challenge by the families of victims gains a powerful argument that lawyers will undoubtedly be able to exploit very well.
The institutional loss for the company and the country is also significant. The European Union has already suspended flights from the company and it does not seem to be very difficult to predict that, once the seriousness and extent of the fraud is confirmed, the recovery of the country's aviation credibility could turn into a real nightmare worldwide.
At the moment it is difficult to imagine who will still have the courage to board a plane under security conditions affected by such strong suspicions.
Time will tell.
