Russia sets up another Mig-31 base

Russia is going to create yet another squadron of Mig-31BM fighters, very high-performance interceptors, in the province of Kamtchaka, in the far east of the country.

The aircraft will integrate the 317th aviation regiment into the Pacific fleet.

The squadron already operates a variety of aircraft, including versions of the Mig-31 itself, KA-27 helicopters and four-engine anti-submarine Il-18 aircraft.

The Mig-31 is a unique aircraft. He does not intend to engage in combat with other aircraft, but his function is to approach at tremendous speed and altitude and launch an attack with BVR missiles - those capable of shooting down other aircraft before they enter the interceptor's visual range. Their speed and altitude are so radical that missiles that will eventually be fired at them will have difficulties in approaching the extremely fast fighter given its great speed and altitude.
