Russian company United Aircraft Corporation is advancing in the assembly of the modernized version of its brand new IL-96-400M, a large four-engine designed for the long-range travel market.

The new plane, or rather, the new version of the old wide body, is expected to undergo very significant changes in the areas of avionics, propulsion, aerodynamics and structures.

A great deal of attention seems to have been devoted by the company to passenger comfort, representing a major advance over the standards adopted in previous versions of the large jet.

The jet will have a capacity of up to about 400 passengers in high-density configurations, but it seems more likely that it will be operated in lower-capacity configurations.

This device appears to be a bridge until the Sino-Russian jet CRAIC CR929, a large twin-engine wide body is ready, if all goes well, around the end of the 2020s.

With 4 PS-90a1 turbofan engines, with only 38300 pounds of thrust, the new Il-96 does not seem to be a good option to confront the modern twin engines that Boeing and Airbus offer to the market, such as the B787, B777, A-330 NEO and A350.

But Russia tends to defend tooth and nail its industry and its manufacturing capacity and technological development, this seems to be part of that country's culture.

Time will tell if the CR929 will be able to rock the markets dominated by European and North American manufacturers and if by then il-96-400M may represent some intermediate step in that direction.

At the moment it seems to us only a niche with somewhat reduced possibilities and intended for limited use.

But that still works! We always hope for the success of any aircraft!
