The Chinese Navy, which is already larger than the United States in number of troops, is in the process of development and modernization, with the construction of new aircraft carriers, and intends to increase its maritime domain.

To this end, the People's Liberation Army (ELP) initiated maneuver exercises with the national aircraft carrier Shandong, a month after the exercises carried out by the United States Navy in the South China Sea.
ELP Navy spokesman Gao Xiucheng said he hoped “that the world will be able to see [the exercises with Shandong] in an objective and rational way. The PLA Navy will continue to organize similar exercises regularly in the future, according to the plan. (...)

[The exercises were] legitimate and can improve Chinese capabilities to protect national sovereignty, security and development interests ”.
China competes with neighboring countries for territories in the South China Sea and these exercises can manifest such territorial claims and the possible Chinese power in the region, but from the point of view of several states in the region, such as Japan, Taiwan or South Korea, China may pose a possible threat to its integrity, as well as to the United States or its other allies in the region.
