Air Niugini, the national airline of Papua New Guinea, has announced a firm order for six Airbus A220-100s. The jets will be used to replace their aging Fokker jets.

In addition, the company will lease three more A220-300s and two A220-100s.

Since August it was already known that the company had opted for the Airbus plane instead of the Embraer E2.

“The new aircraft will offer the highest levels of comfort to our passengers whilst ensuring a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions when compared to the aircraft it will replace,” said Gary Seddon, interim CEO of Air Niugini.

The greater autonomy was pointed out as an important factor in choosing the Airbus jet over the Embraer. The A220-100 variant can fly up to 6,390 km with 100 to 135 passengers on board.

Air Niugini's fleet is quite old, with Fokker 70 and 100 jets, which flew at TAM in the 90s.

The company is expected to begin receiving new A220s in 2025. However, leasing aircraft may begin operating before then.

To continue renewing its fleet, the company recently announced the order for Boeing 787 Dreamliner to replace its two B767-300.
